Samsung Might Be Changing the Design of its Smartwatches to Compete with Apple Watch
The Apple Watch has long been declared as the most comprehensive smartwatch, leaving competitors like Samsung and Google behind – at least for Android users. However, a recent report from SamMobile suggests that Samsung might be looking to change the game by shifting the design of its smartwatch screens from circular to square, a move that mimics the style of the highly successful Apple Watch.
What the Reports Say
The report states that the change is “enthusiastically contemplated within the company” by Samsung, but a final decision is still in the works and may take some time before being implemented. This news comes as a surprise to many, as previous leaks did not mention any intention of changing the design for the upcoming Galaxy Watch 7 series, set to launch on July 1st along with the Galaxy Ring.
A History of Shape-Shifting
Samsung has been experimenting with different design formats for its smartwatches since the launch of its first model, the Galaxy Gear, back in 2013. The original Gear had a square-shaped display, but Samsung eventually switched to circular models for their fitness-oriented watches that mimic the look of a traditional timepiece.
A Game-Changing Move
It is not entirely clear why Samsung is considering a shift back to the square display, but industry experts believe that it could be a response to the decrease in sales for their smartwatches compared to the Apple Watch. In fact, 2023 year-end sales fell 20% behind those of the Apple Watch.
What to Expect
The details of Samsung’s planned design shift are expected to be revealed by the end of July or in early August when the Galaxy Watch 7 series is anticipated to be released. Fans can only wait and see what Samsung has in store for its latest smartwatch design.
