If you’re about to comment “ChromeOS is Linux”, skip it and just watch the video. I go into what I mean pretty early in the video.
“ChromeOS is Linux” in the same way “Android is Linux” or “WSL is Linux”: an academic way that has little bearing on my day-to-day use for a laptop.
Edit: also, yes I know the “Linux Mint Edge” ISO exists. I decided not to recommend that because, according to them: “The Edge ISO image is not as stable as the other ISOs and may not support as many proprietary drivers.”
it works on Dell 314 gimini lake, now installing fedora 😉
Looks like a lot of work way over my head. Would it be easier to load Linux on an old Windows laptop? Or for the less technically inclined load Chrome Flex on these aging Chromebooks? If the goal is to extend life and keep them out of the landfill, a lot of people myself included need more basic solutions.
You rock veronica keep it up I am a Linux Fanboy LOL 🙂
Small question Which is your primary linux distro on your main Computer???? *Just Curios*
This could be a good option for a secondary laptop. I’m tempted to buy one for this once I can afford it
The Acer C720P has a bios write protect screw as well that I had to remove.
I’ve got 2 Acer c720’s that I’ve flashed. In my case I’m running Windows 10 on them. They are speedy little laptops!
Guau! Es una crack !
Good video. I have done this on a variety of Chromebooks and chromeboxes and it’s been great! My ex-chromebooks serve a lot of uses in my lab and the ex-chromeboxes are really helpful network service providers.
I have never had any issues with the procedure. The only issues I have had are on the ChromeOS side of things and with the stupid power supply limitations of the HP chromeboxes. Grrr, no reason for a little chromebox to require a 90W power supply! Fortunately the open firmware doesn’t have that!
been there tried it…
yes it can be done…
anything other than chromeOS on a chromebook is generally a waste of time and money…
you’ll be better served by finding an old, but in good condition, laptop on ebay
case-in-point: in FEB i purchased a Dell Latitude E7270 Intel i7 for $80, its older true, but runs Linux just fine is more powerful than most and was CHEAPER that any ‘new’ chromebook your going to find…
and ebay is littered with these older laptops! because i have purchased more that one
whats the battery backup it gives on linux???
I loved the reference to the movie 😉
My Chromebook is faster than my Macbook pro 13 2017 for browsing 🤣
Thanks for this Veronica, have just put openSuse on my Acer R11 and am loving it!
Leaving a comment today using my old chromebook with Manjaro. Super easy and it seems to be fucntioning!
The only thing I have issues with is HiDPI support is sluggish on my chromebook
Dedicated and instructive video Verónica. My respect to your knowledge, very admirable. Cheers from Argentina!!!👏👏👏👏👏
Nice vid – Bonus points for Fender Heavy Picks!
I have had great success with installing Linux Mint (LMDE version) on EOL Acer C720/C740 Chromebooks and ASUS CN60 Chromeboxes and Dell 3010 Chromeboxes with full compatibility, now for many years, using the MrChromebox Coreboot conversion. With the addition of Linuxloops, I am also able to dual-boot ChromeOS Flex for the best of both worlds! 🙂
Linux is great fantastic O S tons of apps edit photos, video, streaming ripped tunes on my radio right now and chrome well…. just generic google chrome
