Jamaat-e-Islami Rejects Petrol Relief Package, Says Showpiece Measures Unacceptable: Liaqat Baloch

Deputy Emir Liaqat Baloch, speaking to journalists, revealed that the government committee had been informed and instructed to relay to the prime minister that Jamaat-e-Islami's march would be directed towards Islamabad.
ISLAMABAD (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 15th Sep, 2026) Liaqat Baloch, Deputy Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami, declared the party's rejection of the petrol relief package, contending that the government's notification, which suggested that relief measures were welcomed, was incorrect and baseless.
In a statement, he explained that relief could never replace the abolition of the petroleum levy. He further emphasized that Jamaat-e-Islami had made it unequivocally clear to the committee that they would not accept any artificial measures under any circumstances.
Baloch asserted that the government's symbolic gestures would be ineffective. He conveyed a clear message: "Abolish the levy, or there will be a march on Islamabad."
Earlier, during discussions with journalists in Islamabad following the third round of negotiations between the government and Jamaat-e-Islami, Baloch discussed technical deliberations regarding independent power producers (IPPs) and the petroleum levy. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervez Malik and Energy Minister Owais Leghari provided briefings, according to Baloch.
He detailed that Jamaat-e-Islami had demanded the abolition of the levy, noting that its removal could afford Rs103 per litre in petrol relief. He characterized the prime minister's announced relief measure as deceptive, and stated that the government was informed they would lead a march on Islamabad if their demands weren't met.
Baloch reported that Owais Leghari had outlined the government's stance on IPPs. It was acknowledged that matters pertaining to 54 IPPs had been resolved following Jamaat-e-Islami's previous protest.
Jamaat-e-Islami's anti-inflation and petroleum levy sit-ins persist in multiple cities nationwide, while the party has additionally announced a long march towards Islamabad on September 20th.
